3 tips for starting van life

Have you been dreaming about van life? Here are 3 Tips for Starting Van Life!

The idea of van life has become increasingly popular, offering freedom, adventure, and a minimalist lifestyle. We’ve all seen van lifers on social media – I’m even one of them! Transitioning to life on the road requires planning and preparation to make the experience enjoyable and sustainable. Here are 3 tips for starting your van life journey:

1. Choose the Right Van for Your Needs

Selecting the perfect van is the foundation of a successful van life experience. Consider the following factors:

  • Budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend, including the cost of the van, modifications, and maintenance.
  • Size and Layout: Think about how much space you need. A larger van offers more room for amenities but can be harder to drive and park.
  • Functionality: Decide on essential features like a bed, kitchen setup, storage, and bathroom facilities. Build or customize the van to suit your lifestyle.

Take your time researching different van models, and don’t rush the decision—your van will be your home on wheels or weekend adventure vehicle. I personally purchased a 2014 Ford Econoline high top van. I am happy with my choice, but I wish I could stand up straight inside my van!

2. Plan Your Budget and Expenses

Van life can be cost-effective, but it’s important to budget wisely to avoid financial stress:

  • Initial Costs: Include the price of the van, insurance, and any renovations or upgrades.
  • Monthly Expenses: Account for fuel, food, camping fees, and maintenance costs. Track your spending to stay within your budget.
  • Emergency Fund: Set aside money for unexpected repairs or situations. Life on the road can be unpredictable, so having a safety net is crucial.

Having a solid financial plan will help you enjoy the freedom of van life without unnecessary worries. My biggest mistake was not saving enough money for repairs. Over the last two years, I have spent about $4,000 on repairs!

3. Simplify and Organize Your Essentials

Living in a van means adopting a minimalist mindset and prioritizing organization:

  • Declutter: Only pack what you truly need. Focus on multi-purpose items to save space and weight.
  • Storage Solutions: Invest in bins, organizers, and creative storage ideas to keep your van tidy and functional.
  • Stay Efficient: Organize your essentials in a way that makes daily tasks, like cooking or sleeping, quick and easy.

By simplifying your belongings and staying organized, you’ll make van life more comfortable and enjoyable. Too much stuff = a messy van. The best way I stay organized is by using packing cubes! I also use these essential camping items to life on the road easier.

Starting van life is an exciting step toward freedom and adventure. By choosing the right van, planning your budget, and simplifying your essentials, you can set yourself up for a rewarding experience on the road.
